It was business as usual at the pubs in Sahara Mall on Wednesday evening with guests, mostly youngsters, queuing up outside for their late night booze party. Most of the visitors were unaware that the leases of three of the pubs had been terminated by the Sahara mall management and they might have to close down soon.
All the pubs were operating as usual while a restaurant, Mudpot, which recently managed to get licence for serving liquor, was shut down. The restaurant was closed after the management disconnected the power supply in order to restrain the owners from converting the restaurant into a pub.
Though pub-goers denied knowledge about any such proceedings against the pubs, other visitors to the mall welcomed the move by the management. "We come here often and find young boys and girls indulging in fights and other ugly scenes, if the mall management has decided to shut down these pubs, it will be a great relief to visitors and nearby residents," said Praful Sinha, an IT firm employee.
The Sahara Mall management said it had terminated the lease of three pubs - Blue Eyes, Prison and Ipsa in April last year. JK Gupta, Head, Sahara Mall said that last year's brawls and rape incident had tarnished the reputation of the mall and caused lot of inconvenience to the general public. Therefore, mall authorities have decided to close the pubs and end the menace, which had become a routine affair. Though pub owners were not willing to comment, one of the pub employees said the matter was in court.
